Have you attempted to contact the trader in an attempt to solve your problem?

Consumer Affairs Victoria is unable to conciliate complaints until you have contacted the trader about a problem. If, after you have contacted the trader, you feel that our assistance is required, please feel free to contact us again. Alternatively, you may wish to alert Consumer Affairs Victoria to an emerging scam, by using the Dob in a Scam form.

Have you lodged this complaint with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) or a court?

If you have lodged this complaint with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) or a court, then Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) is not able to intervene in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) or court process. If an application has already been made in relation to this dispute, then CAV is unable to intervene and conciliate.

Are you a trader making a complaint against another trader?

If you are a trader making a complaint against another trader, then Consumer Affairs Victoria can help you resolve a dispute with another business, if your dispute relates to:

  • goods or services that cost up to $40,000
  • goods or services that cost more than $40,000 and are ordinarily acquired for domestic, household or personal use or consumption
  • a vehicle or trailer primarily used to transport goods on public roads.

We cannot handle your dispute if:

  • you bought the goods to resell or transform into a product to sell.

You may wish to contact Consumer Affairs Victoria on 1300 55 81 81 for further assistance.

Is your dispute regarding a private sale?

If your dispute is regarding a private sale, then Consumer Affairs Victoria cannot conciliate disputes where goods or services were purchased through private sale (e.g. internet auction sites, private classified advertisements, garage sales etc.) unless there is sufficient evidence to establish that the individual concerned is working ‘in trade or commerce’. You may wish to contact CAV on 1300 55 81 81 for further assistance.

Have you lodged this complaint with another organisation, such as an ombudsman?
