The Old Treasury Building is situated on the corner of Spring and MacArthur Streets, next to the Treasury Gardens, making it an ideal location for wedding photos. The Building is also close to many of Melbourne's inner-city hotels, restaurants and bars for celebrations after the ceremony.
Rooms
The Victorian Marriage Registry offers couples the choice of two ceremony rooms, the Margaret Craig Room, which accommodates up to 55 guests, or the more intimate Thomas Hyde Room, which accommodates up to eight guests.
Both ceremony rooms are elegantly furnished with period-style furniture and decorated with fresh flowers and artwork, including some prints kindly loaned to the Registry by Port Jackson Press.

The Ceremony
The Registry's team of marriage celebrants provide a professional and warm wedding ceremony. You can tailor the vows and readings to suit your wishes, as long as they meet the specific legal requirements. A wedding ceremony may last up to 30 minutes.
Service
The Victorian Marriage Registry offers two different services, either the standard or alternative marriage service.
The
standard marriage service (PDF document, 51 KB, 4 pages) includes vows and optional readings. You can personalise your service by choosing your own vows and readings (such as a favourite poem) to be read by either the celebrant, a family member or a friend. You can also choose a reading from the Registry's
readings list (PDF document, 55 KB, 9 pages).
The Registry offers an
alternative marriage service (PDF document, 50 KB, 3 pages), usually conducted without readings, which is designed especially for couples who may need an interpreter or want a simple and basic ceremony.
Please send any personalised vows, readings, amendments or special requirements to the Registry at least one week before the wedding day. You can send copies of your personalised ceremony to the Registry
via email or by fax at (03) 9613 5899. Please provide both the bride and groom's full names, the date and time of your wedding ceremony and details of any changes to the standard service. The Registry will contact you after receiving and reviewing your fax or email.
Please keep the 30 minute booking allotment in mind when requesting alterations to your marriage service.
Music
You are welcome to bring your own music on CD or invite musicians to perform at your ceremony. Both rooms are equipped with hi-fi stereos and a piano is available in the Margaret Craig room.
Alternatively, you can select music from the
Registry's song list (PDF document, 217 KB, 14 pages).
Witnesses
You must have two adult witnesses (both 18 years of age or older) present on the day of your ceremony to witness the ceremony and sign the marriage certificate. Witnesses may be a family member or friend. The Registry does not provide witnesses.
Interpreter
The Victorian Marriage Registry's celebrants conduct all marriages in English. If either the bride or groom do not speak English, they will need to provide their own interpreter. An interpreter can be a family member or friend who is fluent in both English and the language spoken by the bride or groom.
You can contact the
Translating and Interpreter Service (TIS) if you need help finding an interpreter.
You should advise the Registry if you intend to use an interpreter for the ceremony. Interpreters will need to complete a statutory declaration (declaring they speak both English and the bride or groom's language) on the day of the ceremony.
