Organising a wedding can be both an exciting and daunting time. Here is some information designed to help ease the stress and make sure your wedding day goes smoothly.
Eligibility
In Australia, any person aged 18 years or older who is not currently married can marry. A person who is between 16 and 18 years of age can marry, provided the other party to the marriage is at least 18 years of age. Where two people are under the age of 18 they cannot marry one another.
A person who is 16 or 17 years of age must obtain a court order from a judge or magistrate allowing the marriage, and written consent from both parents, before they can marry.
Notice of Intention to Marry (NOIM)
To get married in Victoria, or any other Australian state or territory, you need to complete a Notice of Intended Marriage form (NOIM) and lodge it with the celebrant, minister or registrar who will perform the marriage. You must lodge the NOIM at least one calendar month plus one day, and no more than 18 months, before your chosen wedding date.
You can download the
Notice of Intended Marriage form (PDF document, 63 KB, 4 pages) from this website or obtain it from the celebrant or minister who will perform your marriage. You will need
Adobe® Acrobat® Reader to download the NOIM.
You can find further information about lodging your NOIM at the
Federal Attorney-General's Department.
Civil celebrants and religious ministers
Marriages can be performed by a registered civil marriage celebrant or an authorised minister of religion.
You can find a list of registered civil marriage celebrants and religious ministers at the
Federal Attorney-General's Department.
In Victoria, the

There is no set fee for a wedding ceremony in Australia. You will need to confirm all costs with your celebrant or minister before booking your wedding.
