The Registry maintains an historical index and a marine index. Each index hold entries providing a summary of individual historical records kept by the Registry. What you find here can lead you to the full record of a family member or a particular event in the state's history.
Once you find an entry of interest, you can obtain further information by purchasing an uncertified image or historical certificate.
The Historical Index contains entries relating to:
- births in Victoria from 1853 to 1908
- marriages in Victoria from 1853 to 1942
- deaths in Victoria from 1853 to 1985
- church baptisms, marriages and burials in Victoria from 1836 to 1853.
Each entry includes the:
- name of the person or people to whom the entry relates
- type of event (such as a birth, baptism, marriage, burial or death)
- registration number
- registration year
- other information relevant to the type of event.
The Marine Index contains over 6,200 entries relating to births, marriages and deaths that occurred onboard international and coastal ships bound for port in Victoria between 1853 and 1920.
Each entry includes the:
- name of the person or people to whom the entry relates
- type of event (such as a birth, marriage or death)
- name of the ship on which the event occurred
- registration number
- registration year
- other information relevant to the type of event.
