Applying for a birth certificate
Popular Pages

You can apply for a standard Victorian birth certificate online or by submitting a birth certificate application form. Application fees apply.

When applying for a standard birth certificate, make sure you:

  • Complete the application in full.
  • Supply all required proof of identity documents. If applying in person, provide original proof of identity documents. If applying online or by mail, provide police-certified photocopies. See the application form and proof of identity page for further details.
  • Include the required payment or credit card details.
A standard birth certificate is a legally recognised proof of identity document. This document is often required for official purposes such as claiming government benefits, enrolling a child in childcare and school, or obtaining a passport or driver licence.

The Registry can only issue a birth certificate once the birth is registered.

New parents please note, birth certificates are not automatically issued when you register your child's birth. If you need a birth certificate for your child, you will need to complete the certificate application section of the Birth Registration Statement.

If you require a certificate for a birth which occurred outside Victoria, you will need to contact the Registry office of the state, territory or country where that birth occurred.

Turnaround times may vary depending on how you submit your application.

You can find more information about birth certificates in the Births FAQs.

The Registry recommends you keep all Registry-issued documents secure.

 Commemorative birth certificates

Commemorative birth certificates are designed as a memento of your family's special event. Commemorative birth certificates are not accepted for official purposes such as proof of identity.
